a walk in the legazpi neighborhood

18 Jul 06

I chanced upon Swagat Indian Cuisine on Rada St. while on a client call last week, and decided to order roti (whole wheat dried bread) for take out. Overwhelmed by the Indian jargon on the menu, I did what every clueless person would do in such a situation: ask for the waiter’s recommendation (wanted a dip different from the usual curry). Ended up with an eggplant mix and a cottage cheese dip. The minimum waiting period is 15 minutes for all orders, so I decided to kill time with a leisure walk around Legazpi Village.

Interesting finds along Rufino St. (formerly Herrera):

1. La Grotta, Italian restaurant which a friend who recently tried it described as “interesting and worth a second visit.”

2. Studio 116, offering adult ballet and ballroom dancing classes:

Was I the one that said La Grotta was worth a second visit? Even if I wasn’t — I’m telling you now it is worth a second visit. It’s absolutely charming.

Swagat is the real deal: homecooked Indian food, with a very hands-on owner. Visit the website to see the menu. It’s a bit on the pricey side though (that’s Makati rent for you)…my 5 rotis and 2 dips cost P450.

Other choices for hole-in-the-wall Indian food in Manila:
    1. Hassad’s (sp?), U.N. Ave (samosas are cheap cheap cheap, and you can buy Biryani mix to use at home!)
    2. New Bombay Canteen along dela Costa St., Salcedo Village, Makati

Just found out, it’s Assad’s. and there’s a branch in Marikina now. Along UN Ave, you can also go the Uncle Ed’s. :)

Had dinner with a few other bloggers last week at La Grotta. Took a few more people over later in the week. First visit was far better than the second.

I like some of the dishes at Swagat, but i prefer the samosas at Bombay Kitchen (Salcedo Village).

What went wrong on the second visit to La Grotta?

I’m a huge fan of samosas myself– they’re staples in every meal in Indian/Malay restaurants for me! Whether with Sampalok Sauce (as in Long Grain) or Yogurt Dip (Banana Leaf), yummmmm!
