volunteer abroad, anyone?

I’ve long tried to understand a friend’s inclination to help the kids in Africa, as opposed to helping Filipinos first, who practicality-wise (among many other reasons) make more sense to help.

This argument by Mark Goldring, Chief Executive of VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas), lends insight on this:

International Volunteering has traditionally been seen as something rich countries do to poor countries. VSO wants to challenge that stereotype and is finding innovative ways of moving committed people with skills from wherever they are available to where they are most needed. VSO now promotes volunteering between and within Southern countries, harnessing vast talent and challenging the view that North has all the answers.

The Probe Team, a local tv show that in my opinion rightfully deserves the label “journalist”, offers an inside look at the life of Filipino international volunteers:
