marikina shoe expo

It made me wonder why the Marikina Shoe Expo would be anywhere else but Marikina, but there it really is, amidst the hoopla of Cubao–a small loop of shoe boutiques and vintage shops. A quiet alternative to malls on a lazy Sunday afternoon, with curious sets of twin shops–saw two trusty Janylins an alley apart, and two Solimann’s right in front of each other. Made-to-order boots can be had for a reasonable P2,900; 100% leather, proudly Marikina made, 10-day waiting period.
My find for the day: a 1911 tarjeta postal of a sculpture made by Rizal. It reads, “cabeza de una joven dapitana” (loosely, “head of a Dapitan youth”). Was a pleasant surprise to know he was a sculptor.
Capped the afternoon with merienda at popular Bellini’s. Pasta (P180ish), Small Pizza (thin crust, already good to share, P170ish), Orange cake (big slice, P100).
Marikina Shoe Expo is in Araneta Center, Quezon City, almost across Rustan’s Cubao. It’s a quaint complex with a big sign painted on the perimeter wall. Pay-parking right in front of the shops inside.
